講義概要
This class gives a survey of American civilization and culture. This class will be taught completely in English.
(授業はすべて英語で行われる。) Class topics will include the following:
• American first peoples, immigrants, and current population mix
• Comparisons between the U.S. and Japan.
• American history & government
• Natural features including climate, geography, and natural resources.
• The U.S. artistic culture: including fine arts, music, theater, movies, architecture, etc.
• American foods, homes, & lifestyle
• Holidays, and sightseeing.
We will use our textbook to organize the topics for this class. Most weeks will have homework. You should have completed all assigned homework before class. (For example, you should read the pages in our book and answer the questions before class.) I will put our other lecture information (PowerPoint files, notes, & questions) on our Moodle website. Lecture notes should be taken during class & turned in at the end of class.

第2週Lesson 1Chapter 1 (pages i-1): Introduction, & In the Beginning. . Questions about the US. The US’s first people. Comparisons between the U.S. and Japan. Handout: US Map
第3週Lesson 2Chapter 2 (pages 2-4): The Pilgrim Fathers. European discovery of America, early immigrants, and the first Thanksgiving.
第4週Lesson 3Chapter 3 (pages 5-8): The War of Independence. The War of Independence and expansion to 50 states.
第5週Lesson 4Chapter 4 (pages 9-11): The Civil War. The war between the states.
第6週Lesson 5Chapter 5-6 (pages 12-16): The Wild West & Native Americans. Cowboys, rail roads and the pony express. The American “Indians”
第7週Lesson 6Chapter 7 (pages 17-19): New Americans. Later immigrants
第8週Lesson 7Chapter 8 (pages 20-23): Black Americans. Freeing the slaves and civil rights
第9週Lesson 8Chapter 9 (pages 24-27): The government of the USA. The president, congress and the supreme court.
第10週Lesson 9Chapter 10 (pages 28-33): Living in the USA. Work and jobs, money, dates, time zones, homes, cars, religion, TV, newspapers, shopping, schools, sports.
第11週Lesson 10Chapter 11-12 (pages 34-39): Eating and drinking the American Way & Music from America. American foods, drinks, smoking and alcohol. The blues, jazz, country & western, & rap.
第12週Lesson 11Chapter 13 (pages 40-44): Some great American cities. Boston, New York, Washington DC, Atlanta, Chicago, Seattle, Las Vegas.
第13週Lesson 12Chapter 14 (pages 45-48): California. Size & climate, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Hollywood & Films.
第14週Lesson 13Chapter 15 (pages 49-53): Beautiful places to visit. Sightseeing in America. Mount Rainer, Crater Lake, the Rocky Mountains, Yellowstone National Park, the Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore, the Great Lakes, Niagara Falls, the Mississippi River, New England.
第15週Lesson 14Chapter 16 (pages 54-57): Hot & cold, big & small. Florida, the Everglades, Alaska, Mount McKinley, the Northern Lights (aurora borealis), Texas, Rhode Island, Hawaii.

直接関係する科目はないが, 視野を広げる意味でも他の文化関連の科目も積極的に履修することをお勧めする。留学英語II~III、英語コミュニケーションI~IV、英語プレゼンテーションII~IV、ICT英語I~IIなど。
評価方法
Final Test (学期末試験), Homework & Participation (宿題と参加など, Taking notesノートなど) により, 総合評価する。

Lessons build on material that was covered in previous lessons, so attendance is important to learn the material covered in class. Our class time is also a good time to practice your English skills and build your vocabulary. When using English, don’t worry about making mistakes. Just do your best! このクラスは英語表現、語彙を学ぶよい機会です。英語を話す時はミステイクを気にする必要はありません。講義内容を理解するためには、毎回の出席が重要である。最善を尽くすことが大切です。
準備学習の内容
Most weeks will have homework. You should complete all assigned homework before class. (For example, you should read the pages in our book and answer the questions before class.) You should take notes on our lectures during class & turn them in at the end of class. These notes will help you during your test.
(If you are absent, you can write notes from the PDF files on our webpage. If you want to use those notes on our final test, then you must turn them in 3 days before our test.
Assigned homework should be completed before class. To become skilled in English, it’s important to frequently review vocabulary and grammar. Studying English for ~15 minutes every day is better than studying English for 2 hours once a week. Also, build your reading and listening skills by using material that you can understand 80~90% of the time.
